Hello and happy Monday! This weekend was exactly what I needed and I forgot about all the house projects to instead take some much-needed time to unwind. The weather was absolutely amazing and it felt so good to just spend time getting some fresh air. I’ve been seeing the Enneagram test trending quite a bit the past few days and I figured now that we’re all spending some more time being homebodies right now, it was a fitting topic to helping us all understand more of ourselves. Plus, if you’re quarantined with others, knowing each others types can be a great way to understanding each other better so that you all come out of this time even stronger!
The Enneagram Test
What Is The Enneagram?
On the surface, the Enneagram test can easily be brushed aside as another personality test. But, it’s actually SO. MUCH. MORE. Unlike your basic personality test, the Enneagram test actually has the potential to offer insight and transformation to anyone who takes the time to learn their type. While you’ll hear people report their “Enneagram type”, the test actually looks at various motives, fears, and desires to then determine at the totality of who you are.
The results reflect our strengths and our unique abilities when we are secure, as well as our blind spots and bad habits when we are insecure. It can be remarkably eye-opening. For me personally, it’s been an incredible way to understand decisions I’ve made in the past as well as how I react to situations in the present.
Determining Your Enneagram Type
(via)
I won’t go into each of the Enneagram types, but in short, you need to take it (only takes ~10 minutes and it’s free!). At the end, you’ll be given a Enneagram number and just to note, there is no number that is better or worse than the others. Each number also has a number that they move towards when they are stressed and a different number they move towards during growth (which explains the 2 lines extending from each number in the figure above).
Click here for my favorite site that explains each Enneagram type.
I’m a Enneagram Type 7. Decoded, this means I’m primarily an Entertaining Optimist characterized by the traits of being spontaneous, versatile, acquisitive, and scattered. At my core, I’m motivated by the need to enjoy life and avoid negativity. What’s funny is that when I was younger, I had personally characterized this trait as being “fickle.” I always had numerous interests and just a desire to seek out new experiences all the time. Adrian can also attest to the fact that I get bored easily and am always looking for that new adventure — I’m that person on vacations who’s always booking crazy excursions instead of just laying on the beach!
What the Enneagram test also explains though, is that for me, my optimism and pleasure-seeking behavior is actually a way for me to deal with anxiety and fear. A type 7 knows that if his or her mind isn’t sufficiently distracted, it will turn against itself. Keeping busy has been my way of preventing myself from overthinking, and as hard as it is for me to admit, this is also 100% true. In my early 20s when I was still single and living on my own, I actually took a second job just to keep myself busy in the evenings — it was a necessary distraction so that my mind wouldn’t go crazy from boredom / stillness.
What Is An Enneagram Wing?
Enneagram wings are the numbers on either side of your core Ennagram number — one of those types will contain characteristics that you can relate to for yourself and will appear as a higher match in your test score results. Wings are great for providing more color into your personality and individual choices.
As a type 7, my wing options are either a type 6 (Loyal Guardian) or type 8 (Protective Challenger), and for me, I was an 8 wing. While a pure type 7 is all about experiencing the best of the world and avoiding the unpleasantness of life, the 7w8 ends up being much more goal oriented, assertive, and ambitious. Work is my way to distract myself from unhappy thoughts and yep, explains how I ended up graduating college in 4.5 years with 2 undergrad degrees and a masters.
Use The Enneagram To Your Advantage
Knowing your Enneagram type can be an eye-opening experience and a great opportunity for you to understand where you are in your life based on the decisions in your past. It can be useful to know when you’re getting into the unhealthy tendencies of your type and how to instead change it to be something that allows for growth.
I also had Adrian take the Enneagram test last night and it was so interesting to learn that he is a Type 1 (Perfectionist). In these cases, it helps to know that he’s motivated by doing what’s right and can become stressed when they feel as though they’re not making a difference. Knowing these details can be so useful when it comes to building a marriage but even just for the short term everyday peace now that we’re all quarantined together for weeks on end!

So now that you know all my inner motivations, fears, and values , go take the Enneagram test for yourself! I wasn’t convinced at first when I initially took the test years ago but I’ve since gone back to it several times. At a certain point, it just clicked for me as it became relevant for my journey on understanding who I am and why my life is the way that it is.
