Anyone else feel like they’ve made about 450 dinners during this time under quarantine? It’s crazy to think that we’re going on week 10 of being at home now and I don’t think I’ve ever cooked so much in my life! My kitchen skills are definitely improving but I’ll be the first to admit that come mid-week, I’m usually tired of all the same foods that I’ve been cooking every single week and itching for something new and interesting. If you feel the same, then I’m excited you’re here; because today I’m sharing 5 of my personal meal delivery service reviews!
I’ve relied on meal delivery kits for yearrrs now (see my first review from 2015!) and they have saved me during quarantine. I schedule my kits to arrive on Wednesdays and it’s become something that I really look forward to when hump day comes around!
If you’ve ever been curious about which meal delivery kit service to try, I get it. Even Adrian (my husband) can’t keep track of which delivery service we’re getting on any given week, but after tried more than a half dozen of them personally over the last 5 years, I have a pretty good grasp of the strengths / weaknesses of each. Read on for my review and see which one is my favorite!
Meal Delivery Service Reviews
Green Chef – meals for specific diet plans
What I Like:
- 5 different diet plan options: paleo, keto, plant-powered, balanced living, family
- recipes include good portions of vegetables, low on saturated fat
- use certified organic ingredients
- easiest-to-understand recipes
- most accurate recipe time estimates
- delicious options that my kids have enjoyed the most
What I Dislike:
- shipping isn’t free — calculated per box
- no mobile app
Bottom Line:
My current favorite is Green Chef and in my opinion, it’s the best option all around. In general, I try to eat pretty healthy and love the different diet plans that provide healthy options to choose from, plus it’s so easy to switch between the different plans if you’re just wanting variety! All the recipes go big on vegetables, which I greatly appreciate, plus the dishes have had the most success with the family.
Hello Fresh – familiar recipes easy to recreate
What I Like:
- familiar recipes that are easy to follow + recreate
- great for beginner cooks
- kid-approved meals
What I Dislike:
- recipes started to repeat and lacked variety
- few to no options for those on specific diets
- a little heavy on the carbs
- shipping isn’t free — $7.99/box
Bottom Line:
Hello Fresh has a soft spot in my heart as it was the first recipe delivery kit I ever tried and I learned so much from cooking these recipes for 6+ months (see my full review from 2015!). I loved that the recipe ingredients were all familiar and there are actually a couple recipes that I still make to this day as they were simple and straight-forward enough for me to memorize after having made it! I did find that the recipes started to repeat after having been subscribed for several months which is why we originally decided to try another service, but I still do highly recommend Hello Fresh if you’re looking to build up your cooking skills and want something familiar and easy!
Sun Basket – best for health-conscious wanting organic, veggie-packed
What I Like:
- focus on organic ingredients
- 10 meal plan options include paleo, carb-conscious, gluten-free, pescatarian, diabetes friendly, quick & easy
- lots of add-on options including lunch, breakfast, and even snacks
- generous portions
- super easy to skip
What I Dislike:
- lots of salads as the vegetable option — not as kid friendly
- shipping isn’t free
- many recipes missed the mark on taste
Bottom Line:
Sun Basket has become the recipe kit delivery service that I turn to whenever I want a mini break from Green Chef. Not only are their meals great healthy options, but I love that they have recipes specifically designed to be “Speedy” and finished in under 20 minutes — it’s perfect for those weeknights I’m just not wanting to slave over a complicated recipe after work!
Blue Apron – ethnic recipes for the culinary adventurous
What I Like:
- lots of globally-inspired recipes (including Asian flavors that I love!)
- affordably priced at $7.49/serving
- offer Beyond Meat (vegan) options
- Weight Watchers Approved and Diabetes Friendly recipes
- video instructions
What I Dislike:
- hard-to-find spice combinations make recreating recipes difficult
- limited options for 4-serving meals
- flavors not as kid friendly
- no options for those following specific diet plan besides vegetarian
Bottom Line:
Blue Apron is one of the most popular meal delivery kit services and while I did love all the globally-inspired meals options, I actually had a lot of misses with recipes that sounded good but just didn’t turn out quite right. There were a few recipes that I absolutely LOVED but unfortunately found it difficult to recreate on my own as there were spice blends provided in the meal kit but no description of the spice breakdown. Blue Apron is one of the more affordable recipe delivery kits and they offer frequent promotions (including $60 off your first 3 boxes currently!) so definitely give it a try!
Home Chef – best for those who want variety and minimal prep
What I Like:
- lots of meal options and ways to customize your meal kit
- offer 15-minute meal kits and oven-ready meal kits
- can add additional protein packs
- recipes are simple and straight-forward
- kid-approved recipes
What I Dislike:
- few to no options for those on specific diets
- delivery is $10 for orders over $49
Bottom Line:
Home Chef meals are another favorite and they provide a good mix of healthy meals along with some other more indulgent options. I especially love the quick 15-minute meals as well as the oven-ready kits that make getting dinner on the table super easy!
